CatalogSearch behaving oddly on various AFP volumes

  • Subject: CatalogSearch behaving oddly on various AFP volumes

I'm the author of "Find Any File", a free GUI-based file search tool.

I have an odd effect that makes no sense to me and which hampers my tool:

I have two different remote volumes mounted:

1. An OS X (10.4.11) Server's root volume, via AFP
2. An OS X (10.5.5)'s root volume, via AFP

When I execute FSCatalogSearch on these volumes, only the one on the
OS X Server works, while the other one keeps returning error -1304
("Catalog has changed and catalog position record may be invalid").

Now, that volume is on a MacBook, which does not run any services that
would keep modifying the catalog in a way that should provoke this
error code. In fact, when I run the same FSCatalogSearch _locally_ on
that MacBook's volume, FSCatalogSearch works all the time. This
indicates that the error message is somewhat untrue, doesn't it.

So, why could this error come up only when invoking FSCatalogSearch
remotely, and only on that one computer's remote volumes but not on
the other's?
