Suspecting bug in FSCatalogSearch on OS X Server or in 10.5.6 client

  • Subject: Suspecting bug in FSCatalogSearch on OS X Server or in 10.5.6 client

Someone notified me that my tool (Find Any File) which performs FSCatalogSearch() calls on volumes to search for files, would act weird when operating on remote volumes:

Often, the search would return the SAME results multiple times. What happens is that the search loops around several times, apparently: I can see that found items come in in the expected order, but once the supposedly last item is found, it finds the first item a second time, then all the others come in a second time in the same order, and this can loop again several more times. The amount of loops is random - sometimes it only does one, sometimes 2 or 3, in bad cases many more, even infinitely.

It happens with vols hosted on OS X Server 10.4.11 as well as OS X Server 10.5.6 (formerly upgraded from 10.4.11 Server).

The clients (on which the FSCatalogSearch was executed) are always 10.5.6, I believe.

I could not reproduce the error with a client running 10.4.11 (PPC), nor with AFP volumes hosted on non-Server systems.

Thus, it's not yet clear whether this is a bug in OS X Server, or on the client side of 10.5.6, or a combination of both.

I can reproduce this on my own Macs as well, so I can rule out a single "odd" system here. And, of course, executing the same FSCatalogSearch query on the host itself does not show this misbehavior.

Note: This has NOTHING to do with Spotlight. And FSCatalogSearch does not return errors or a "hasChanged" during the search.

Does anyone know of a bug in this area? Unfortunately, I don't have access to seeds, so I cannot see if this is fixed in 10.5.7.
