I discussed this with the DiskArb engineer years ago and his opinion was that the diskXsY format should be considered API (that is, it's safe to assume that diskXsY is within diskX).

Of course I still think the I/O Registry approach is better (-:  Chances are that you're going to want to rev this code to support more stuff in the future (disk images being the obvious example), and the I/O Registry approach gets you heading down the right path.
