Can anyone tell me exactly what /.MobileBackups is for?

Greetings,

I'm author of a backup solution for OS X and I'm investigating the purpose of the /.MobileBackups directory that appears on some Lion systems. I'm particularly interested in knowing if it contains data that needs to be backed up, or whether it's cache that should be excluded.

TIA
