Cumulative Folder Size

Dear List,

Lion Finder has some kind of cache for the overall size of a folder. Try on a server volume (Mac OS X Lion Server AFP):

 * Open a Folder with lots of Subfolders
 * Menu View > as List
 * Menu View > Arrange By > Size
 * Finder shows all subfolders in the "---" group
 * Menu View > Show View Options
 * check the box "Calculate all File Sizes"
 * now Finders groups the subfolders appropriately
 * close that window, disconnect server and connect again
 * the sizes are there immediately (and also when not arranged by size)

I checked NSURL resource values, xattr, getdirentriesattr and MDItem but couldn't find this size. I did find the kMDItemFSNodeCount that gives me the amount of subitems but not the size.

-> where is this information stored? which API to use?

Best regards,

mahal
