UI plug-ins?

Hello folks,

New to the list, reach through the archives on lists.apple.com. A perhaps silly question.... but is it possible to add any type of plug-in to an Apple installer that would add an additional panel to the install? I'm thinking of a task like prompting the user for a serial number before continuing with the install. Since I can't find any Apple installers that do this, and the idea presents challenges for remote and command-line install, I suspect the answer is 'no', but I thought I'd ask.
