This issue has been solved with the help of Alexey and Chris. I didn't try
adding an additional semicolon to the last string in my .strings files (this
is contrary to "Listing 2" to the example on the apple page:

Everything now works properly with that additional semi-colon. I've amended
my apple bug report, recommending that they update the above listing.
