I was curious about the origins of 'wheel' group.
Here is what I found:
thread.html#1724>
In summary:
* It came from the DECSystem-10/20 culture, where "wheel" was
shorthand for "administrator."
* May have come from "big wheel" which means boss
* Remember the Simpson's episode where Milhouse describes his dad as
a, "big wheel down at the cracker factory"
* The terms "Big Wheel" and "Big Cheese" originally referred to those
who were wealthy enough to purchase a whole wheel of cheese.
(foodreference.com)
* A lot of people think it was the basis for "wheeler dealer"
* Cassell's Dictionary of Slang says that "big wheel" originates from
the 1930s: big wheel n. [1930s+] an important, influential person,
esp. in business. [the image of a smooth-running, powerful machine]
Did we get off topic?
