As my little machine park makes it rather easy for me to try this, I did:

1) On an Intel iMac running 10.4.8, open Disk Utiltiy

2) Create a 2.5 MB Read Write Disk Image

3) Transfer Image by network to PowerMac G3 running 10.2.8

4) On a PowerMac G3 running 10.2.8 open disk image

Result:

Disk Image opens

Something else must be the problem, unless these are not the correct steps to reproduce your problem
