Hi Luke,
Our installation requires uses 10 DVDs of data. The first DVD is cross
platform, and includes Windows and Mac installers. Both of these
reference a common set of files on the first DVD, which are not bundled
in the installers. DVDs 2-10 are data which is common to both
platforms, and we have a custom app (launched from the installer) which
copies and verifies those files.
The only way I could see to accomplish this (common set of files shared
by Windows and Mac installers, not stored in the package) using
PackageMaker was to copy files using scripts. Some of the files are
going to standard locations in the hierarchy (e.g. AU plugins). Other
files are going to a user-specified destination, which is most likely on
another drive entirely.
We are using "Select Destination" to allow the user to specify their
main drive for the "standard" components, but another method to select
their data destination. My scripts cannot fire until the main part of
the installation starts (after the "Easy/Custom install" screen).
On the whole, this scheme is working well. However, some users are
confused and scared on the Select Destination screen. So we want the
Select Destination screen to say "yes, please select your system drive
here. Don't worry, we will not be copying 40 GB of data to it!"
I hope this is clear. In the future it would be great if PackageMaker
could directly reference files that are external to the package. I guess
that using plugins (Tiger and later only) some of the customization I
desire might be possible, but I'm not sure and in any case we are also
supporting Jaguar and Panther for now.

Is there any way to add some additional text to the "Select
Destination" screen? My product installer copies files to other
destinations and we're worried that users might be confused about both
the destination and the file sizes.
Can you provide some specifics? If a user selects a disk in your
installer, where else are you installing files?

Thanks!
