I use a shareware program called DropDMG from http://c-command.com/
dropdmg/. There is a fee program called FreeDMG at http://
www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/freedmg/, but I haven't tried it.

So, I can do most of this by hand using Finder. Now, is there any way
to customize this from a shell script or a C++ program?
