This is /definitely/ going down the Road to Bad Ideas. Firstly, your
program probably shouldn't be running as root. (DEFINITELY not if it's
a GUI app.)
Agreed.
Secondly, you may be opening yourself up to potentially nasty race
conditions just to write some DRM registry file somewhere.
I don't see how simply writing and reading a file can lead to a race
condition when running as root as opposed to running as another user.
