There are some changes in Installer.app in Leopard that look very
strange (if not buggy).
Let's imagine I'm French. Let's imagine that I want to create an
install package that includes a French EULA and a French ReadMe.
But since my middle name is Stupid, I'm running Mac OS X in English.
(1) So I open PackageMaker 3, create a new package, use the Interface
Editor to add a License and a Read Me.
I then build and run the package.
Sure enough Installer.app opens the package but:
- the Introduction step displays the default Welcome Message (which had
been modified in Leopard) in English
-> It does not work like this on 10.2.8 and 10.4.10. If French is the
only available localization for the Welcome message, it's used for
other languages too.
- the License step does not exist.
So basically, it looks like that for a license to be displayed, it is
required to be available in the language the user is running the OS.
-> This did not work like this with previous OS versions.
-> While this could be somehow fine in relation with French laws since
I seem to remember reading something stating that no licenses are valid
unless they are available in French, it does not explain why the French
license is not displayed since it's available. Because the way it
works, you can install a software without either being notified that
there's an EULA.
(2) OK, now since I'm just 98% stupid, I then add an English (AKA
Ethernet) localization for the License.
Again, I build and run the package.
The License Step is now displayed in English. But in case you forgot,
in this story I'm French and stupid, so I choose Français in the Popup
Button of the License pane.
I then click Continue (in 10.2.8, Continue would have been changed to
Continuer, but that's changed sometimes ago, well...) and:
- the alert sheet is displayed in English.
-> This does not work like this with previous OS versions.
-> I suspect that since the dialog is not displayed in the language of
the EULA, agreeing to the License will not be considered valid by the
law but IANAL.
In all previous OS versions, at least this dialog was displayed in the
language of the EULA.
In my humble (and stupid) opinion, all these changes are regressions in
Installer.app.
But there's probably a logic behind all this.
