Installing same version twice

I have a metapackage that installs a component common to several products. When I run the installer, that component is always updated (and runs its preupgrade and postupgrade scripts) -- even if it's identical to the one on disk. Is there a setting that controls this, so that it only touch the files and run those scripts if the version number is different?
