I tried the bombich NetBoot Across Subnets
app on a machine in the same subnet as the server (test lab). I made a
pkg and deployed it with ARD - it immediately rebooted the machine (I was
expecting this, but hope to learn how to shut that off) and it rebooted
into NetInstall rather than netboot (my netboot image is the default).
Not cool, but maybe this is just a result of only putting the IP into the
bombich utility and not specifying an image name - hoping the default option
would have kicked in, but apparently this is a leftover from when I just
tested a netinstall on the same machine?
So then I shut down and take the machine
out to a cube in another subnet and restart while holding down 'N', but
it still doesn't see the netboot server and only wants to boot to the local
drive.
So far none of this is desirable behavior.
What I am hoping to do is set something
so that the client machines can use the N key to boot to a netboot server
should a hard drive fail or a serious problem happen where we need to do
a backup of the system and a reimage, but normally boot into the local
drive.
Is getting the network fixed to allow
bootp traffic the best option in this case? Or am I not using NBAS correctly?
