I just updated the vanilla.catalog file, and while I was doing that I
walked a computer through the manual update process from 10.5.0 to
make sure that I have the exact list needed. So it is a little cleaner
at the moment, but should still work for everyone.
And a small update on what I have been doing on the InstaDMG front:
I will be going to the MacSysAdmin conference in Sweden in September
to present on InstaDMG (among other things), and am mulling over
another presentation at MacWorld in February. But that means I
actually have to have something to present on. I have been working on
a couple of projects in my off-time (right now I can't justify much
work time for this), and so InstaDMG has not been getting my full
attention. Unfortunately I did not manage to get a ticket for WWDC (my
boss wanted to get me a free one, and there was nothing available),
since I am just down the road I will be up there for one-or-two
evening events. But I am really going to hurt without the easy access
to engineers that I was counting on.
But I do have a little bit of Python code in place, right now I am
focusing on a couple of classes for dmg handling (including some
cleanup-at-error code) and I have a start at figuring out how to use
the sandbox/seatbelt system to make sure that the installers can't
reach outside our target DMG (this has been a problem with a couple of
packages). I am debating back-porting the sandbox code to the current
InstaDMG, mostly to get people to test it for me.
I do have an idea that might make large parts of our process overlap
with the Munki project that Nigel and Greg are working on, but that is
going to take a while before there is enough possible crossover to
start ripping code.
I also tried again to get the installer to work with chroot, but that
path looks closed, so I think I am going to abandon that again (but I
think that would fix many of our troublesome packages). I am going to
file a bug/enhancement-request with Apple, and will post the number
here. I would really appreciate it if others could gang up with my
Radar report with impact numbers, so we can convince Apple to to this.
I would hate to have to write my own code to replace the installer
just to chroot the installer scripts.
