Fortunately this only affects a handful of beta users in this case, but certainly agree that it's not expected behaviour as standard.

For the record, from a user point of of view, if the application was
installed/moved to a custom location, the expected behavior of an
update is to update the application where it is not remove it from
where it is and install it somewhere else.
