I wonder if the whole link bit is a red herring. I know that the GUI installer queues installs one after another, so that no two are ever running at the same time. I know it is possible to run multiple at the same time by using the command-line version, but maybe the GUI limitation is protecting us from ourselves in a way that the command line installer does not, and you are seeing the result of shooting yourself in the foot this way.
A guess is that things might be getting tangled in the part where it calls out to the com.apple.installd helper (in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons), but that is a wild, out of the blue, guess.
