What kind of certificates to use for packages?

Considering that it's apparently(1) not possible to use a self-signed certificate for packages, what kind of certificates are working?

Is it mandatory to go through one of the Certificate Authorities listed in the Keychain Access application?

(1) apparently here means that it just doesn't work and Installer.app does not present a clear error message to the user.
