Munki looks great Greg! Looked over the site and just the rundown on the
all the different packaging tools themselves is well worth the read
through. See: http://code.google.com/p/munki/wiki/Repackaging.
Meanwhile, for those of us Mac admins struggling to find even that
precious 1 hour/week to implement a larger packaging infrastructure like
this, the updated tips on MS Office repackaging Michelle provides will be
a useful guide.
As to the original question, I did discover, with a little off-list help
from Stephane, that the imported package I ripped off from the default MS
Office installation to Set Dock Tiles being was itself set to a "required"
status and being unselectable in the final installer interface, was
defaulting the entire metapackage installation to /tmp, instead of the
other packages individually assigned destinations in /Library or
/Applications. Strange, but removed, reimported, and worked fine after
much hair-pulling.
Yes, yes, perhaps even more justification to transition to a more flexible
methodology as Greg outlines with munki or in other places with instadmg
and the like.
Dummy Question #1:
Michele, could you clarify if these instructions will include the custom
icon bit on the Office installation? Trivial, but did cause me to switch
back over to Iceberg last time I repackaged our Office suite.
Dummy Question #2:
If we are all creating packages for common applications like these (and
assuming no custom org-specific settings), is there not a more effective
means of crowdsourcing our package efforts? I am aware of the Manifest
Destiny project, but seems like there might be value in sharing/vetting
the same Office 2010 installation being custom created across 500
different organizations at the same time.
Just a thought.
Thanks again to all for your unique insights on this stuff. Great list.
