We have an installer, but it gets distributed with additional files so we still needed to decide between ZIP and DMG.
For us a DMG has worked much better than a ZIP file for distribution because it is more robust to being passed around, especially via email. Previously we had regular problems with antivirus programs stripping zip from emails, and with intermediate people in a chain unzipping the archive on Windows and passing on a mangled folder. Now that we are using a dmg, the contents are only accessible on the platform for which they are intended.
