So bundle packages are still supported, but: flat packages are "THE FUTURE". (Flat packages are supported back to 10.4.0.)

They are fundamentally different in all aspects, except that they are both "packages" that work with Installer to accomplish the same goals.

In the Flat World™, you do this:
1) Make a Payload Archive, which contains
- the compressed archive of the payload
- the Bill Of Materials
- preflight and postflight installation scripts
