Thanks for the information and the hint to look at other solutions. It is indeed possible to use an embedded script as a distribution requirement when the distribution is created with Packages (there may be other solutions that support this as well).
In our particular case, not being able to run the script on Mac OS X 10.5 is not a problem. The requirement script is intended to ensure that Java is installed on the system before installing the contents (a plugin). In the case of 10.5, Java is installed as part of the standard OS install.
One question about Packages: is it possible to create a package requirement for a visible/selected item such that when the requirement is not met the item is only unselected and not disabled? The only choices I see in the UI are "Remove this choice" and "Make this choice unselectable...", the latter of which disables the item entirely.
