Ah, that’s it, then. Our background just showed our logo, UNDER the translucent text box. If that’s solid, then the image won’t be seen.

We are using a pair of .png files that we are gluing together as a "resolution independent" .tiff. The only problem we ran into is that with Yosemite they made the text box non-translucent. Our artist had done a nice image with translucency in mind and now it is obscured by the white text box. It might be that Apple removed the option for bitmaps, since they are focused on making multi-resolution systems.
If you want some sample code on how to make these, it can be gleaned from some code I contributed to `dmgbuild`:
Mostly you are looking for the line: `/usr/bin/tiffutil -cathidpicheck`
