Is there another way to accomplish what I am trying to do? Not easily; not that I can think of based on what responses I've seen returned from more CD and DVD devices than I care to count. You can certainly poke at the VPD and that the serial number feature, and potentially derive a hash from the device model and firmware information as a fallback, but there's a reasonable shot of duplicates. Some combination of an INQUIRY and MODE_SENSE_n commands, or a GET_CONFIGURATION for a serial number feature (108h), if the drive has that. Disks don't necessarily have a VPD, and commodity devices tend not to. But for further details on this, see the VPD stuff in the SCSI Primary Commands (SPC) documentation, and the GET_CONFIGURATION features in the MultiMedia Command (MMC) documentation, over at the T10.org site. How does 'Finder' open an application and bring the window to the front?

So does start apps from other application like firefox. But noticed that double click an icon in "Finder" can start it correctly. So I did some test and found that if I wrap the command into a fake ".app" folder and use "open -a fake.app", it'll show the new window in the front. It's not good solution and I'm sure I haven't got the root reason. I suppose there is an option in the configuration file of window manager for MacOS to control this behavior. Am I right? My current code does the following: 1) Registers with DiskArbitration for IOCDMedia events 2) When an event occurs, I grab the IOPath from the DADisk's description and match that with an io_service_t 3) I inspect the io_service_t's properties, particularly for kIOPropertySCSITaskUserClientInstanceGUID 4) I use the GUID to uniquely identify the device Here is where I am a stuck; I would have expected that the GUID remains the same across reboots, but empirical evidence suggests this is not the case. So I can't use the GUID as a key for drive identification. This may be a good thing, since ROM drives may not be STUC devices and as such wouldn't have a GUID anyway. My next idea was to use the drive's serial number via kIOPropertyProductSerialNumberKey, but while IOStorageDeviceCharacteristics.h says the key is mandatory it is missing for my drive: My third idea is to use the IOPath of the device, but is this a reliable way to uniquely identify a CD device? Mac OS X already has a DHCP client bound to the corresponding UDP receive port, so you can't bind to that endpoint.
