Apple Airport card & programmatic access to signal-strength and network names

Is there an API that allows programmatic access to an Airport card's signal-strength and network information? I checked Open transport and IOKit references and drew a blank. Is it possible to communicate with the Airport driver? I'm guessing the menu-bar signal-strength indicator does this.
