I'll show my OSX ignorance and ask:

Why can't code making lots of DNS requests simply launch a command-line
tool for each new request when one is blocked for more than half a second
or so? The launch would create a new process, wouldn't it? This would allow
the main program to continue making requests when one instance of the tool
is stalled because some server is not responsive.
