The use of an AppleTalk router is to provide extended network
connectivity. A router is not necessary, for example as in the case
you describe. The 3 machines can talk with each other, but that's
it. In a larger network environment, there may be a need to setup
zones so that different systems can be logically associated with
similar user. In such a case a router will be installed to provide
this functionality.
