MacOSX Lacks Kernel Support For PPP -- ???

I'm updating some old PPP monitoring tools, and now I'm seeing this error when I try to log into a ppp server via a modem:

Mac OS X lacks kernel support for PPP.
To include PPP support in the kernel, please follow
the steps detailed in the README.MacOSX file.

Any idea why?
