You might try just "serial", which might work but my memory is hazy.

btw This is a known issue with networking on traditional Mac OS. I remember back in Mac OS 8.6 we introduced a serial emulation driver for the IrDA port which registered the IrDA port before the built-in modem, and thousands of PowerBook owners had to go to the Modem control panel and switch the popup back to modem after upgrading.
