Cisco/AppleTalk Compatibility

  • Subject: Cisco/AppleTalk Compatibility

We are trying to use an IP filtering table and an AppleTalk filtering table
based on MAC addresses. In short, we will be creating a hardware specific
access list to restrict access to our network.

We have come to a crossroads regarding AppleTalk. An "expert" in Cisco network
management (in Australia) has told us that AppleTalk filtering and TCP/IP
filtering do not work well together, and that we would be best off turning off
AppleTalk on our network to accomplish this goal. We would like to avoid
having to turn off AppleTalk, but unless someone (fingers crossed) knows of a
way to make this work, we're gonna have to cut it out.

Here is a bit of the hardware in question:

-Cisco 3500 series XL
-Cisco 6000 series router
-Approx. 250 nodes

Any help would be, of course, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John Scanlan
