Folks,
It's been pointed out to me that my original response pointed
responsibility for the deeming PAP as unsupported lay with Apple
Network Engineering. I apologize to the Apple Networking team for
this statement. The PAP issue has been discussed at length at
numberous meetings. There is unanimous agreement, that this is a
technology which should be supported. in fact there have been bug
fixes implemented to OT and BSD AppleTalk API's where fixes are
possible.
The real issue of PAP Server support in OS X is an issue of priority.
There is a limit to what features that the engineering team can
provide. It is understood that not all features can be implemented.
Given the marketplace challenges, resources have to be focused on
what will make Apple a successful entity thereby providing developers
with a platform for your software. As I indicated earlier, there are
features not present now for the Macintosh, which must be in place
for the Mac platform to remain competitive.
AppleTalk PAP support could be elevated, but at the expense of other
projects. One aspect of this problem is that the OS is not the black
box which it is in the Classic case. The Darwin sources to BSD
AppleTalk are available. the sources for DDP and ATP are available.
This will be deemed an unacceptable solution by some, however, the
alternative, moving engineering resources away from higher priority
networking project, seems even less attractive.
