Disconnected Ethernet Port
Disconnected Ethernet Port

We have this problem on 9 (and we have had it for a very long time).
Our application connects to the network using low level raw ethernet to
connect to devices that only communicate over raw Ethernet (no IP here).
We can locate these devices automatically by sending out broadcast
packets. Our process has been to open up raw ethernet connections on all
available ports and search for the devices.
The problem occurs with disconnected Ethernet ports. In particular on a
PowerBook that uses Airport, the Ethernet port is not plugged in. Just
the act of opening that port locks of the entire machine for several
seconds (5-10) seconds. This is long enough that users will think that
our application has crashed or something is wrong.
Is there any way to detect this situation so that we can avoid opening
ports that are not connected?
I have asked this question before, but I dont recall getting an
(acceptable?) answer.
