If you are programming for MacOS 8/9, check out the Apple Enet SDK
in the Open Tpt Module Developer part of the OpenTransport SDK.
There are two sample drivers.
For USB, check out "EnetShim/DLPI Support Sample". The sample
says it simplifies writing an Ethernet driver for USB, PC Card
and CardBus Ethernet devices.

That's as abstract as the API gets on MacOS 8 & 9.
