Peter,
Thanks for the response. Connecting to a hub and then to the
router is a good idea but why would the iMac negotiate the
connection to the hub easier than the router. Isn't the
TCP/IP protocol the same on both? By the way I forgot to
mention that I tried both BootP, DHCP, and Manual
configurations and all work the same.

I would try placing an inexpensive Ethernet hub between your Macs
and the NetGear RT314. From your description, it might be an
Ethernet auto-negotiation conflict.
Next, check out IPNetTunerX from my website (www.sustworks.com).
It might be possible to tune your iMac for better network performance
(try the included "Cable Modem" or "DSL" settings file).
