I have been able to get it to work. Are you using the Internet Connect.app to set up the VPN connection? Check to see if the app logs anything to the console during connection setup. I have had problems with the secret key not working, coping it right from a https page, but otherwise no problems. Now, we are using a linux server running some windows compatible vpn server. perhaps the same one apple is using. I think it is bison. Here is a summary of what I would check:

Check to see if there are any logs in internet connect or the console.
Do an ifconfig -a check to see if the interface is up
Do a netstat -rn check to see if you default route is through the pptp connection
ping the other end of the tunnel to see if that works
talk to the help desk of whoever is running the server
