Is it safe to do that from within a callback to the read stream (kCFStreamEventHasBytesAvailable, kCFStreamEventErrorOccurred or kCFStreamEventEndEncountered)?

It's definitely safe on 10.2; I haven't tested on 10.1, but I believe it's safe there, too. If it's not, I'd expect it to crash immediately, so it should be easy to tell.... :)
