Heya, folks,
Does anyone know what the state of IP multicast regulation is these days?
It used to be that there was a huge block of "transient" addresses that
you could just use -- unfortunately, I suspect IANA stepped in to prevent
collision problems. I've found a bit of information about restrictions
and some protocols for allocation and advertisement, but it's pretty
sparse.
Windows supports the MADCAP protocol with special APIs which allow you to
request multicast addresses and release them using a MADCAP/DHCP server.
Is anything like this supported under OS X or will I have to write it
myself? Is this even necessary?
There's also the SDP/SAP protocol for advertising servers. Unfortunately
the address allocation is pretty crude, and I don't want to step on
anyone's toes in the course of snatching of 5 or so addresses.
In short, what's the "accepted" thing to do if you'd like to use IP
multicast for streaming/whatever with your own app? I could just
hard-code an address -- but it seems like this isn't being a very good
Netizen and might not even work if they ever adjust the forwarding
boundaries.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Adam C.
