Is there any way to detect clients joining the multicast address in the server software?

Well, there a GLOP addresses, if you have your own AS. If you don't you can ask you service provider. I am guessing you are asking for a global multicast address, since you can use a site local or link local multicast address freely as you'd like (and only upset the people in your own site if you step on someone else).
