Is it possible to have code awakened by a packet arriving at a given
port similar to the "Wake when the modem detects a ring" feature in
Energy Saver?
I understand the heat-constraint; is it possible to undertake a small
amount of processing while the laptop is closed?

Anybody correct me if this is no longer true.
Your conclusion is right, but your reasoning is only sometimes right.
Laptops go to sleep when you close the lid because that's what users
expect. With some machines, if you have a keyboard and display
attached, you can run the laptop with the lid closed (close lid to put
it to sleep, attach keyboard and display, wake it up using the
keyboard). That feature comes and goes depending on the heat
properties of the machine. If the machine gets too hot when running
with the lid closed, we disable the feature.
