Are you sure you're using a root user, rather than an administrator?
On Mac OS X you have to specifically enable the root user (in NetInfo
Manager) before you can log in as root.
Which work around could you suggest for 10.1 ?
I tried this at home and it seems to work.
1. As an administrator run NetInfo Manager.
2. From the Security menu, choose Authenticate.
3. Enter your admin user name and password.
4. From the Security menu choose Enable Root User.
5. Follow the instructions to set the root user's password and so on.
6. Log out.
7. Log in as user name "root", with the password you set in step 5.
8. Use the International panel of System Preferences to enable the
French (in my case, Dvorak) keyboard.
9. From the keyboard menu, select the French keyboard.
10. Log out.
11. Log in with your admin account.
IMPORTANT: You now have to type your login password in AZERTY, not QWERTY.
12. Run NetInfo Manager.
13. From the Security menu, choose Authenticate.
14. Enter your admin user name and password.
15. From the Security menu choose Disable Root User.
This worked a charm on my 10.2 machine. Your mileage might vary on
10.1, but I have no reason to believe that it won't work there.
As I mentioned earlier, this is already fixed in the WWDC seed of
Panther (10.3).
