In reading through my accumulated networking emails I came across a
post from last year entitled "Setting which 802.11b network to connect
to?"
Here is the clip:

I'm working on updating a program written using MoreNetworkSetup to
allow my users to configure their computer to use an 802.11b (AirPort)
card to connect to the network. Using MNS to tell the computer to
connect via the wireless card is easy enough, but I was wondering if
there's any way to allow the user to see a list of the wireless
networks in range and choose among them (i.e. specify which AirPort
network s/he wants to connect to)....
Any thoughts/pointers would be appreciated....
I don't think there's any way to do this on traditional Mac OS using
public APIs.

Now, my question is can this be done on OS X? I am investigating the
options available for pre-configuring Airport to work on multiple
hotspots. So far I gather its not possible to configure multiple
airport networks for use in the same location?
Is there anyway to programatically detect available airport networks so
one could dynamically configure the preferred network and
authentication details when a recognized hotspot came into range (
without user intervention )? I think I also read somewhere that
details such as signal strength are not available? Are there any plans
to make this information available in public API's?
More questions.... Considering SCF doesn't have any real
documentation, and MoreSCF doesn't use kSCPropNetAirPortPowerEnabled,
kSCPropNetAirPortAuthPassword or
kSCPropNetAirPortAuthPasswordEncryption does anyone know the details
behind using these keys? They appear to be essential for configuring
Airport for secure networks!
