The firewall system preference will check to make sure the ipfw rules are in synch with the personal firewall settings. If anything is off, the preference panel will assume a third party firewall is installed. If a third party firewall uses kernel extensions instead of setting up ipfw rules, the preference pane will not notice.

I have an application that uses ports 49152-65535; the ports are assigned dynamically. My interest in a Firewall API was to allow my app to request the firewall permits data transfer on the assigned ports without involving the User each time. I was thinking that the User would be prompted for authorisation once, when my app first accessed the firewall API.

I have a third-party firewall running and, interestingly, if I access firewall settings from System Preferences I get a message telling me to access the third-party app.
