Well that means I would need to change my code for "Panther Server" version.
But we would still be interested to know why a standard API like
gethostname would behave differently on "Panther Server" and all other MacOS
versions.

You probably don't want to use gethostname for determining the
machine's IP address. There's a section of DTS Technote 1145 "Living
in a Dynamic TCP/IP Environment" that explains the various ways you
can get a list of the machine's current IP addresses and monitor
changes to that list.
