Strange. My recollection is a bit different in that NKEs were
OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED (Documentation, Sample Code, support). And
suddenly they were not anymore. I'm still wondering if this is a
coincidence or not this occurred when someone left Apple for another
company a while ago.
The proposal to not provide binary compatibility between releases was
controversial within Apple.
The issue is not about this, it's about the lack of a clear agenda.
Developing stable KPIs (Kernel Programming
Interfaces) was part of the compromise. While politically necessary,
it's unclear how soon they will appear. It's a rather difficult
problem
because the requirements are not well specified. Which kernel
structures
need to be exposed behind stable interfaces... all of them?
You could add:
How will you handle the fact that you will have 2 or more Kernel
Extensions to distribute depending on which version of the OS you're
targeting?
