Actually if you look at the RFC you will note that it is more than

Yes, I was just emphasizing the difference between that and BinHex.
I see, but I never heard of it and as others have responded it doesn't
seem to exist.
Agreed. I have concluded that someone was thinking of BinHex 4 and
wrote MacBinary 4.
The Panther Finder zip archive format could also be considered
standard, depending on your needs.
Are the details for that available anywhere?
The word standard seems to imply that something at the receiving end
will know the format. Is that something under your control? If so it
might be easier to define your own format. It's not too hard to do.
My own client will usually be the one downloading/uploading the files,
but since it's HTTP it seems like a good idea to make it work with
other HTTP clients as well. My server is already using HTTP for other
things, so I figured it would be a good choice for file transfers too,
especially since there are ways to do things like resumable downloads.
Shameless plug:
The project this is for, called Volley, is a plugin-based client/server
application with chat rooms and file sharing and so forth. It's
inspired by Hotline and similar apps, except the various services are
all plugins. The cool thing is that the plugins can interact, doing
things like adding support for other protocols like HTTP or Hotline.
