I have a conundrum for your delectation:
The network:
Cable "Modem"

iMac-DV <---- 100BT -----> LinkSys BEFW11S4
(wired) Wireless Router
|
|
|
Asante 10BT Hub
| |

| |
Mac 5500 Performa 580
+Farallon +Asante Ethernet Bd
Ethernet Bd
1) All 3 computers can use the internet, via the Cable "modem".
2) The iMac can talk to the 580 & vice-versa
3) The 5500 can not talk to either the iMac or the 580
4) Neither the iMac nor the 580 can talk to the 5500
When I say they cannot talk, I mean they can't even ping.
The 5500 used to have an Apple Ethernet board; with it, the 5500 could
NOT use the internet!
The iMac has OS-X 10.3.8. It used to have Jaguar. There was no
difference.
The 580 used to have OS 7.5.5; now it has 8.1. No difference.
The 5500 has had OS 7.5.5, OS 8.1, and now has OS 9.1. No difference.
The cables between the hub and the 580 and 5500 have been swapped, with
no change.
Clearly, the hardware is all right, since the 5500 has to use both the
hub and the router to get to the Cable "modem".
How's THAT for a mystery???
