How to detect Wifi device?

Hi all. I've been digging through OS X API documentation for the last couple of hours, trying to find info/example of how to determine if a wifi (802.11 device) is installed and up and running. The solution needs to be Panther friendly. Could someone throw me a pointer? Thx!

/Jay
