5500 Ethernet not working

  • Subject: 5500 Ethernet not working

I have an old Mac 5500 that is driving me bannanas!

I just can't get it to run ethernet.
I am using OS 9.1, but I have also tried 8.1, which I think is the one that came with it.

I have tried swapping all relevant hardware, e.g. the drop cables to the switch, and the COMM-2 card.
The switch works fine with 2 other machines (a Performa 575 running OS 8.1 and an iMac DVD running Panther).

I have tried using every extension I could find, to no avail.

The 5500 doesn't crash or hang, it just ignores the ethernet interface.
The card appears as a choice in the AppleTalk extension, and remains selected once chosen.
I am using manual IP addresses, so it isn't a DHCP failure.
The selections in the TCP/IP control panel remain selected, and are the same as for the other 2 computers, except for the last digit in the IP address, of course.

Trying to ping out drops all packets. Ditto trying to ping in from one of the other computers.

The light on the board above the RJ-45 connector does not light up.

The COMM-2 boards I tried are both Apple boards, one of them the original that came with the 5500.

Everything else on the computer works fine, including the modem.

Any suggestions?

TIA,

Dan Killoran
