Just as I feared... it was possibly a certain amount of blindness on
my part -- either SpotLight does not show invisible files (even when
asked), or I just don't know how to use it correctly. That was a snap
under previous versions of OS X.
When I used other tools to find invisible files, it was right there,
where it always was, and editing it as I always have in the past
solved my issue.
Thanks for your patience.
Thanks, too, to Mike Cohen, for suggesting NetInfo for this kind of
mapping -- I'll check it out.
~Louie.
I guess I'm not sure what you're asking. The file is still in
/private/etc/hosts because /etc is a symlink to /private/etc
If you're just trying to find it on the command line, then the command
find / -name "hosts"
would locate it just fine. From there, you just 'sudo pico hosts'
and edit it. Or 'sudo see hosts'. Or whatever other editor you
want to use. Are you trying to get to the file in the Finder? By
default, Spotlight doesn't show files in the UNIX directories to you
in search results. You have to use the command-line command
(mdfind) to search for files in the hidden directories, and even
then, you need to specify that it should search in them like so:
mdfind -onlyin /private "hosts"

Hi. Thanks.
I'm feeling silly now... mine used to be under
"/private/etc/".... when I try to create a "private" folder in my
root directory, I am told one already exists...
Finding the "/private/etc/Hosts" file was easy under previous
versions of OS X, but when i try to search for invisible files
under 10.4.1 they just don't come up in the results...
So, while I hate to ask, any thoughts??
Many Thanks!
~Louie.
My copy of Tiger has it as /etc/hosts
I use it pretty often to block advertisers who use those awful
flash ads, so I know it's there.

For as long as I remember, one could edit a small text file
called "hosts" in order to map a web-address string to an IP
address.
It was there all the way through 10.3.9, and under OS 9, there
was a little button for it in the TCP/IP control panel.
Under Tiger it seems to be gone.
And I need it(!).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
~Louie.
